Forum 1 - Eating Well

As you age, eating well – that is, eating low-fat, nutrient-packed foods – becomes even more important. That's because good nutrition can help prevent health problems that are more likely to crop up later in life, like osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. While your need for calories might start to decrease as your metabolism slows down, your vitamin and mineral requirements stay the same or, in some cases, even increase.
You may be reluctant to start exercising, even though you've heard it's one of the healthiest things you can do. Fortunately, you may be able to maintain or at least partly restore endurance, balance, strength and flexibility through everyday physical activities like walking and gardening. Even household chores may improve your health.

Discuss here some lifestyle changes that you would like to make in your life, in terms of nutrition and exercising. Use the vocabulary covered in this unit. Elaborate and be specific.

I think I have healthy eating habits because I eat too much whole-grain foods,

fish, vegetables, fruits and dairy . I’m avoiding sugar. I don’t care for pasta.

Drink more water, too. I didn’t use to eat vegetables. But now I’m crazy about

them. I’m not a vegetarian but my food is well because I had serious problem

    with my health.

Every day, I enjoy getting up early and running in the University. I do exercise

twenty years ago. Physical activities, e.g., running, do aerobics, swimming, are

my hobbies and lifestyles. Actually, I would like to go Boston city where will be

    the famous marathon of Boston.

When I have free time, I’m going the Avila Park. It’s really beautiful and helps

    when are depressing.

In my opinion, people can change habits for a more active lifestyle and eating

    healthy foods.

For example, I agree to walk for 30 minutes daily is better for people very busy.

Gardening may be for grandparent or parents enjoy going the garden and

planted small trees, wonderful flowers, and a little vegetables.

I’m tired of cleaning the house. I prefer do physical activities near the nature.

  3. In my case I would like to change some customs of my lifestyle in order to have more health and loose weight.

For example, I would like to eat fewer carbohydrates in the evening to loose weight. I would like to eat more vegetables and less pasta, flours, and fried foods, because this is what I used to eat in the evening.

I’ve changed some nutrition habits, for example I used to eat a lot of sweets in the evening, but now I avoid sweets after 3 pm.

I would like to do more exercises in combination with a better nutrition in order to loose weight and be healthier. I like go swimming and I’ve heard that for better results I should swim for a long time in every session. I would like to put that on practice. Exercises like running for long periods is good too for loose weight and obtain muscular definition.

When I can I try go swimming, but actually I do it for a short time and no often. I would like to do that frequently. I hope make this changes in my lifestyle soon, is a matter of will

Well, I think that in my case, I will like to loose weight, and of course eat more healthy food. I´m trying to avoid fried food and junk food, but actually is not easy. Some times I don´t have time to prepare my food in home, or maybe I have a lot of work, so I can´t eat at normal times. Sometimes I have lunch at 3 pm, in this case usually I eat some junk food in the “Ampere”, or something like that.

In other way, I´m a chocolate addict, but I´m trying to eat less chocolate or sweet. Sometimes I can stay for a week whitout chocolate or sweet, but eventually I have a crisis, and eat a lot of those ones, for example when I have a lot of stress I need a chocolate to relax.

Now I´m trying to do exercises too, in order to loose weight. On Sundays I will come to Sabas Nieves, and now I´m doing some exercises in the week, first slowly but I know that eventually I will increase that.

  5. I’ve 35 years, before I use to eat vegetable and fruits, meat and poultry and I use to do much exercise run everyday and playing soccer every weekend, because that is very important for me, also to do for lost weight, but since for years ago I didn’t use to do exercise and eat a lot of junk food like a pizza, hamburger, hot dogs, that is very bad, because increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and hypertension. Therefor I now go to eat fruits, vegetable, meat and poultry and I go to the exercise, like a run twice a week and back the practices of soccer, for reduce the risks

  7. Great work!

I was very pleased with your participations in this forum, especially because each of you highlighted different aspects of nutrition and eating well.

Elvira’s comment was very complete and she is in favor of changing eating habits and doing activities outdoors. Anayibis pointed out that it’s better to eat at home as opposed to eating in restaurants. Jesús and Marcos are trying to cut out fried foods. Jesús mentioned swimming as a good sport to keep in shape. I would add that it is a good choice for those who want a low impact exercise and cannot or do not like to walk or run. In his comment Marcos indicates that he is trying to eat less junk food, chocolate and sweets, which I think will make a big difference in his weight and general health. Guillermo used to have a healthier lifestyle and he comments that he is 35 years old which is a perfect age to try to get back in shape and start playing soccer again. And last but not least, Noralih changed sweets for veggies –something very hard to do.

I hope you all keep your good intentions in trying to have a healthier lifestyle!

PS: I will send you comments and corrections of vocabulary and structure by email.
